Given the range of hardware available to many seniors, what options do we have for deploying some new ideas?
Browsers
PC, laptop, Smart TV, tablet and smartphone all provide some form of browser access to the internet.
With this breadth of reach, it’s tempting to focus on HTML/CSS solutions that will run across all of these devices.
However, the ability to ‘push’ notifications to the user probably requires one of the mobile operating systems…
iOS, iPadOS, MacOS
The various Apple operating systems have considerable reach – but also considerable overhead. For example, there are many hoops to jump through to get an app available to the public on the App Store – and keep it there.
Android
Fewer hoops to jump through than with Apple but also only available to a portion of the target demographic. If the benefits were enough to justify providing hardware though, a cheap Android tablet is a fraction of the cost of the entry-level iPad.
Windows
Would allow apps to run natively on many laptops and PCs but these are likely to be of less interest than tablets and smartphones.
